{"id":1535,"date":"2019-07-25T13:25:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T18:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/?p=1535"},"modified":"2019-07-25T13:44:55","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T18:44:55","slug":"tuck-pointing-the-middle-barn-and-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/andrew-peterson-farmstead\/tuck-pointing-the-middle-barn-and-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuck pointing the middle barn and house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is with a continued great amount of appreciation that I thank the Sando Foundation for providing the funds for a new furnace in the Farmhouse and funds to complete tuck pointing on the house.\u00a0 The choices of where to use the funds were based on the recommendations found in the Historic Structures Report, and the simple fact that the furnace died in December.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog, I would like to show the work stone mason Patrick Sieben is doing at the farm, and\u00a0 why we chose to use the funds donated in December, the way we did.<\/p>\n<p>The photo below is part of the Chaska brick addition Andrew Peterson added onto the house.\u00a0 In his diaries, he talks about the large Chaska brick kitchen addition and the two large pantries. The corner is located on the south west corner of the addition.\u00a0 The brown you see on the right is part of the main house.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1540 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/west-corner-prior-to-repair-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/west-corner-prior-to-repair-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/west-corner-prior-to-repair-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/west-corner-prior-to-repair-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bricks can be seen clearly falling away from the house.\u00a0 The cause is a simple long time malfunctioning down spout.\u00a0 It is amazing something so simple can cause such damage.\u00a0 The previous owner, poured cement over the spot and used the same to try and replace the missing mortar.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with this solution is that it is like placing a band-aid on a wound without fixing the source of the problem.\u00a0 In fact, using cement made the problem even worse.\u00a0 The cement compound is stronger than the simple mortar used in the 1870s.\u00a0 This meant that as the cement moved with heating and cooling, it further damaged the mortar and moved more bricks out of their original location.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1537 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-with-Patrick-Sieben-142x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"594\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the below and above photos note some stones that have pulled away from the foundation.\u00a0 The width of the wood planks are 18 inches!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1538 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-143x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-143x300.png 143w, https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick.png 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1539 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/foundation-west-kitchen-corner-232x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/foundation-west-kitchen-corner-232x300.png 232w, https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/foundation-west-kitchen-corner.png 369w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It will take a few more days to repair the foundation and replace the bricks, but I&#8217;ll be sure to post photos when it is complete.<\/p>\n<p>The last photo is Patrick and his two journeymen sons working on the north wall.\u00a0 Patrick will be doing some small repairs on the smoke house as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1536 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-north-wall-143x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-north-wall-143x300.png 143w, https:\/\/www.carvercountyhistoricalsociety.org\/wpcchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/chaska-brick-north-wall.png 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Middle (1914) barn foundation has completed tuck pointing.\u00a0 The photos from that process are not as dramatic.
