Our Communities: A Walk Back Through Time
Watertown
In the summer of 1856 a company of men from St. Anthony led by Isaac Lewis surveyed and plated Watertown. Originally, the area was known as "Rapid Waters". Later the name was changed to Watertown after Watertown, New York, which was the hometown of Isaac Lewis. At one time Watertown was the medical center of the County with as many as five doctors and two hospitals. This community has been growing by leaps and bounds. The population in 2000 was 3, 029.

Our 32nd governor, Harold LeVander, graduated from Watertown High School in 1928. His father was the Minister at the Gotholm Lutheran church.
