Our Communities: A Walk Back Through Time
Mayer
Helvetia was the original location of the settlers in this community. When the railroad came through it was a mile south, thus luring the business district south to the town of Mayer. Mayer was named for one of the Road masters of the Railroad. Christian, Fred and Jacob Haueter, from Switzerland, were the first settlers in Mayer. Mayer is located on the Camden / Waconia line. The Helvetia area is now just residential area. None of the businesses are in existence today. The Crow River runs between the two communities. Mayer is well known for the Lutheran High school, which was built there in the 1960's. In 2000, the population of the City of Mayer was 554.
